FOTON Institute has an historical research thematic on optical telecommunication. One of the research axes concerns the study of coherent sources (single frequency and mode locked laser diodes). FOTON has a know-how on relative intensity-noise and frequency-noise measurements especially at telecom wavelength. During the last few years, FOTON developped instrumental skills on the characterization of coherent blue sources.

LASPE at EPFL is a well identified laboratory at the European level for the in-house growth, characterization and processing of III-V nitride semiconductors and related photonic devices including laser diodes. EPFL processing facilities are used to develop Single-mode Fabry Perot diode lasers operating in the blue-violet range.

Yanne K. Chembo research group at Femto-ST Institute focuses on exploiting the nonlinear and quantum phenomena hosted in ultra-high Q whispering gallery mode resonators. The aim is to use these resonators to generate ultra-pure microwave signals, either through optoelectronic oscillators or optical frequency combs originating from Kerr, Raman or Brillouin effects.
